Hussein Riyad Mahmoud Shafiq was born in the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in Cairo to a Syrian mother and a well-off Egyptian father who works in the leather trade. He is the descendant of a Turkish family whose origins go back to the rulers of the island of Crete. The father used to take his three sons (Hussein), (Mustafa) and (Mohamed Fouad) - the latter of whom is an artist also known as (Fuad Shafiq) - with him to the Salama Hegazy Theater to watch plays with him. Hussein and his brother Fouad had a passion for art from an early age, and in their early youth they joined Abdul Rahman Rushdi’s band. At a very young age, Hussein played the father’s roles and performed them brilliantly, and tried to turn to singing except His voice did not help him. After he left the Military College, he formed a team (Amateur Theater Acting) with (Youssef Wehbe), (Ahmed Allam), (Abbas Fares), (Hassan Fayek) and others, and their acting teacher in this play was (Ismail Wehbe), brother of the acting giant (Youssef Bey Wehbe) and then (Abdul Hamid Hamdy) after him, and (Hussein Riad) decided to give his life to art on the advice of (Aziz). Eid), such as his first play (Take Care of Emily) in 1916 at the George Abyad Theater starring (Rose Al-Youssef), the famous media figure and founder of the well-known Rose Al-Youssef magazine. During this play, he changed his name from (Hussein Muhammad Shafiq) to (Hussein Riad) for fear that his family would recognize him, as acting or “diagnosis” as he called it was a defective activity at that time, and (Hussein Riad) was the name by which he was known after that for the rest of his life. Some did not know that he was the brother of the actor (Fouad Shafiq), who also turned to acting after that. When Youssef Wehbe opened the (Ramses) Theater in early 1923, Hussein Riyad joined the Ramses troupe, to continue his brilliance, and a close friendship was linked between him and (Youssef Wehbe). Then he joined the (Fatima Rushdi) troupe for several years, and he continued to work for several years with several other theater groups, working with the Al-Rihani troupe, Mounira Al-Mahdia, Ali Al-Kassar, Okasha, and the Actors Union in 1934. He entered Egyptian cinema. Which later embraced him as one of the best people to come in its history, since cinema was silent, such as the films (His Excellency Kashkish Bey) in 1931. Then, in the beginning of talking cinema, he presented films, including (Defense, Salama Fi Khair, Lasheen). After that, his various cinematic works continued, and his continuous participation in them did not stop until his death. During his career, he played charitable roles in most of his roles with a few exceptions. He was known as the role of a caring father in many of his roles, and he participated in many works. Famous and well-known in Egyptian cinema, the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser honored him with the Medal of Arts in 1962. Words differed about the number of his total cinematic works, but what is certain is that it is no less than 147 films. In addition to cinema, he presented about 140 plays, the most famous of which are: (A Storm on the House of Othello, The Merchant of Venice, Louis The Kindness, The Funny of the Caliph, The Death of Cleopatra, The Joyous Widow, and Regret. He also presented about 150 radio works. He died in 1965 before completing his last film (The Wedding Night), while performing his role in front of the camera, following a heart attack.
