Shafiqa Al-Qibtiya is an Egyptian historical drama film that recounts the turbulent life of one of Egypt's most celebrated belly dancers of the early twentieth century. Expelled from her father's home and forced to leave her only son Aziz in his grandmother's care, Shafiqa rises to wealth and influence while being denied any contact with the child she loves. Years later, Aziz grows up to fall in love with the daughter of Pasha As'ad — the same powerful prime minister who was Shafiqa's own lover. When the Pasha humiliates Aziz before his beloved, Shafiqa strikes back publicly, humiliating the minister in front of his wife. The act of maternal vengeance sets off a devastating chain of events that reverberates through every layer of her hard-won world.
