Al-Sharid is an Egyptian social drama set in Cairo in 1914, painting a vivid portrait of love, sin, and social consequence in early twentieth-century Egypt. Two young men meet two veiled women — Nima and her friend Hosnia — and feelings quickly develop between Hassan and Hosnia. But when Hosnia is engaged to another man, a fateful transgression occurs between her and Hassan, resulting in the birth of a daughter named Souad. Growing up without knowing her father, Souad carries the silent burden of a secret buried beneath layers of shame and social convention.
