
The great Egyptian filmmaker Abdel Halim Nasr is considered one of the most famous directors of photography in the history of Egyptian cinema. He participated in filming many films and did not stop at photography only, but extended to production as well. Abdel Halim Nasr contributed to the discovery of many current movie stars, the most prominent of whom was the artist Yousra. Abdel Halim Nasr was born in the Muharram Bek neighborhood on August 2, 1913. He began his relationship with photography since he was fifteen years old with his father, the photographer Ahmed Nasr. Then after a while he left his father’s studio to join another studio, the owner of which was the photographer (Alvisi Orfanelli). Through his work in this studio, he met Togo Mizrahi and their relationship strengthened. After that, he was assigned to film the movie (Doctor Farhat) in 1935, and he helped him with the photography. His younger brother, Mahmoud Nasr. Then Togo Mizrahi and Abdel Halim Nasr decided to go to Cairo, where their first film together was “Laila Bint Al-Rif”, and then he filmed many films. He taught photography at the Cinema Institute in the first years of its opening in 1959, and in 1942 he formed a production company with the late artists Ahmed Badr Khan and Hilmi Rafla, under the name (Union of Artists Company). Abdel Halim joined the company in 1948 and produced eight films of his own production. The film (Doctor Farahat), directed by Togo Mizrahi, is the first film that Abdel Halim Nasr filmed. The first salary he received was 15 pounds a month, while he was working with director Togo Mizrahi on the movie (Dr. Farhat), and he continued to work with him until his salary reached 1,500 pounds a month, which was the highest salary for a photographer at that time. He directed and filmed a short documentary film (10 minutes) entitled (The Hunting Party) for Copro Film, shot it in colour, and also did the editing. He established a production company in 1945 with Hilmi Rafla, then Ahmed Badrakhan and Amina Rizk joined them and produced approximately 7 films, then they separated, and Abdel Halim Nasr continued production and produced 8 other films until 1977, the last of which was the film (Palace in the Air). He won the first photography award for the film (A Night of Love) from the Ministry of Social Affairs in 1951. He won the third photography award for the film (I Do Not Sleep) in the Best Egyptian Film Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture for films shown from 1959 to 1962. He won the first photography award for the film (Don't Extinguish the Sun) in the Best Egyptian Film Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture for films shown during the period from the beginning of July 1967 to the end of May 1968. He won a certificate of appreciation for the film “The Dignity of My Wife” for best cinematography. In 1971, he won the first photography award for the film (Illusions of Love) at the first national festival. He won the Photography Award for the short film (What is Taken by Force) in 1974 at the Fifth National Festival of Documentary and Short Films. Abdel Halim Nasr went through directing and filming experience with the movie (Palace in the Air), in which he presented the new face, Yusra.
