Shafiqa and Metwally is a classic Egyptian historical drama set against the backdrop of forced labor during the construction of the Suez Canal. When Metwally is conscripted into compulsory service, he leaves his sister Shafiqa alone with their aging grandfather, unprotected and vulnerable. Driven by desperation, Shafiqa falls into a forbidden relationship with Diab, the local chief's son. When their affair is exposed, she is exiled to Asyut, where she falls into the clutches of Al-Tarabishi, a slave trader. The film is a poignant portrait of a woman undone by circumstance and a society that offers her no safe harbor.
