Overview

Al-Wahsh (The Beast) is an Egyptian action thriller built around the feared figure of Abdel Sabour, nicknamed The Beast, a criminal and smuggler who holds an entire Upper Egyptian village in his grip — the police included. His impunity is guaranteed by the powerful Redwan Pasha, who relies on him to intimidate rivals during election season. When a new officer arrives in the village with his wife and young son, assigned to bring The Beast to justice, the stage is set for a fierce confrontation between state authority and an outlaw who has never faced real consequences. The film is a tense portrait of corruption, power, and the fragile reach of the law in rural Egypt.

The Monster is a 1954 Egyptian crime film directed by Salah Abouseif. It was entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival. It was one of the first films to be labelled as a "social documentary thriller" by cinema writer Georges Sadoul for its use of documentary style, depictions of police abuse, and backdrop of life in the Egyptian countryside.
