Overview
The Venal Gentlemen is an Egyptian social drama that confronts corruption through a devastating personal tragedy. Mahmoud, a low-ranking Ministry of Health employee in love with lawyer Amal, travels to Kuwait hoping to improve his circumstances. Upon returning, he accepts a bribe from businessman Ibrahim Al-Fakharani to facilitate the illegal import of contaminated food. Amal, believing in his innocence, defends him publicly and accuses her own cousin of fabricating charges. The truth shatters everything when Mahmoud arrives home to find that his brother, sister, and children have died from eating the very canned goods he allowed into the country — a moment of unbearable moral reckoning.
