The Lawyer is an Egyptian crime drama film set in the 1960s that centers on Sbankh, a slippery and resourceful lawyer sentenced to one month in prison for contempt of court. Rather than serve his time quietly, Sbankh treats his incarceration as a networking opportunity. Behind bars he forges alliances with powerful and dangerous men, most notably the drug trafficker Hassouna Moharam and Salim Abu Zaid, one of the era's shadowy power brokers. When Sbankh engineers Hassouna's release and begins working alongside him, he enters a world where the rules he exploited in the courtroom no longer apply — and where betrayal is the most reliable currency of all.
