Bahbah in Baghdad is an Egyptian comedy film set in the storied alleyways of ancient Baghdad, blending folklore and farce in equal measure. Al-Usta Bahbah, a local barber, is drawn into the affairs of the wealthy Sheikh Makhlouf, a prominent merchant whose son Qamar Al-Din languishes mysteriously ill. On Bahbah's advice, the father purchases a slave girl named Baddour to lift the young man's spirits — only for Baddour to quickly diagnose the real cause of Qamar's malady: he is hopelessly in love with Shams, the daughter of the city's chief judge. Baddour volunteers to serve as a secret messenger between the two young lovers, enlisting Bahbah as her unlikely accomplice. When the judge discovers the plot he throws them all in prison, and the ensuing escape attempt rounds out a lively, good-natured comedy of romantic intrigue.
