Al-Zamar (The Piper) is an Egyptian drama about Hassan, an engineering student who becomes a fugitive after performing a daring theatrical play with his university troupe that draws the wrath of the authorities. Forced to abandon his studies and his former life, Hassan flees across the villages of Upper Egypt in search of safety and anonymity, moving from one place to the next with nowhere to truly settle. He eventually finds a fragile refuge in the village of Araba, working incognito as a grocery store vendor. The film is a powerful portrait of intellectual persecution, the courage it takes to speak freely, and the heavy personal cost paid by those who dare to challenge authority.

Most of the film was shot in a village in Asyut Governorate in Upper Egypt.
