Heart of the Night is an Egyptian dramatic film adapted from the novel by Naguib Mahfouz. The story follows Ja'far, a young man who defies his domineering grandfather by marrying Marwanah, a simple shepherdess he loves. When his grandfather disowns him, Ja'far finds himself financially helpless and unable to provide for his wife — a failure that leads him to abandon Marwanah and pursue a calculated marriage to the wealthy Huda in a bid to establish himself socially and financially. The film is a sombre meditation on the cost of compromise, the corrosive effects of social ambition, and the painful distance between who we are and who we choose to become.
