The Berry and the Cane, is a 1986 Egyptian movie, directed by Niazi Mostafa, and starring Ezzat Al Alaily, Samir Sabri, Mahmoud El Gendy. with a runtime of 105 minutes.
Al-Toot Wal-Nabout (The Berry and the Cane) is an Egyptian drama film based on the final chapters of Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz's celebrated novel Al-Harafish, brought to life by a cast led by Ezzat El Alaily and Hamdy Gheith. Set in the ancient alleyways of old Cairo during the era of neighbourhood strongmen, the film follows the brutal reign of Hassouna Al-Sab' (Hamdy Gheith), a ruthless thug who extorts and humiliates the residents of his district at will. When Ashour El-Nagi (Ezzat El Alaily) and his family are reduced from comfort to poverty under Hassouna's oppression — and Ashour is forced to divorce his wife (Taiseer Fahmy) and leave the neighbourhood — the stage is set for a defiant stand against injustice. The film is a powerful adaptation of Mahfouz's meditation on dignity, tyranny, and the enduring spirit of the downtrodden.
