Kandil Om Hashem is a celebrated Egyptian drama set in the dense and storied neighborhood of Sayyida Zeinab in Cairo. Ismail, a young ophthalmologist who has studied abroad, returns home to discover that his neighbors have been using oil from the mosque's lantern to treat eye ailments — a practice he recognizes as prolonging rather than curing their conditions. When he tries to raise awareness, the community turns against him, interpreting his medical counsel as an attack on their faith and traditions. Caught between science and deeply rooted popular belief, Ismail must find a way to bridge the two — a journey that becomes as much spiritual as medical.
