Cairo 30 is a landmark Egyptian drama film adapted from Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz's novel of the same name. Starring Hamdi Ahmed, Suad Husni, and Ahmed Mazhar, the film follows Mahgoub Abd El-Daem, an impoverished young man from Upper Egypt who arrives in Cairo desperate to rise above his circumstances. When his friend Salem Al-Ikhshidi offers him a government job and a wife — Ihsan, the mistress of the powerful Qasem Bey — in exchange for turning a blind eye to her continued relationship with the bey, Mahgoub accepts without hesitation. A searing examination of moral compromise, opportunism, and the corrupting power of social ambition set against the Cairo of the 1930s, directed with unflinching realism.
