Shakawet Banat is an Egyptian social drama that exposes the sharp class divide between Egypt's rural families and its landed elite. When the sons of Sheikh Salem — the humble overseer of landowner Mahmoud Bey's farm — pass their high school exams, their mother sells her gold jewelry to send them to Cairo University, defying the bey's belief that peasants' children have no place in higher education. In retaliation, Mahmoud Bey demands that their daughter Amal come to work as a servant in his mansion. Amal soon finds herself face to face with the bey's son Mahmoud, her childhood sweetheart who is being groomed to marry the prime minister's daughter — a collision of love, pride, and an unequal social order.
