Criminal in Spite of Himself is an Egyptian comedy-mystery film that begins when Aziza is robbed of her jewelry. She receives a mysterious call from someone claiming to be the thief, asking her to leave her door open so he can return the stolen goods. When she alerts the police, they arrest her neighbor Esmat, found hiding in the apartment. The twist: Esmat is not the thief at all, but a sleepwalker in the wrong place at the wrong time. A clever comedic caper built on mistaken identity and absurd misunderstandings.
