A Message to the Governor is an Egyptian comedy-adventure film widely regarded as one of Adel Imam's finest comic performances. Imam plays Harfoush Ibn Barqouq Al-Rakibdar, a simple-minded messenger dispatched to carry an urgent letter to the governor requesting reinforcements for the besieged city of Rashid during the British occupation. Along the way Harfoush encounters a mysterious sage who transports him forward in time to twentieth-century Cairo. Stranded in a bewildering modern world he cannot begin to comprehend, Harfoush stumbles through a series of increasingly farcical situations, eventually being branded both a terrorist and a madman. The film blends historical satire with time-travel comedy, offering sharp commentary on Egypt's social and political trajectory through the eyes of its baffled medieval protagonist.
Risālah 'ilā al-Wālī is a 1998 Egyptian comedy-fantasy film directed by Nader Galal and starring Adel Emam and Yousra. The story moves between the early 19th century and contemporary Cairo. In 1807, as British forces threaten the port town of Rashid (Rosetta), local notables select Harfoush to carry a plea for reinforcements to Egypt's wali, Muhammad Ali Pasha. On his way to Cairo, Harfoush encounters a sage who transports him two centuries forward to 1998. As a consequence, he navigates modern Cairo while trying to complete his original mission.
