131 Hard Works is an Egyptian comedy film set in the aftermath of the October War, following Shehta, a street vendor who returns home from Port Said hoping to resume a quiet civilian life. His hopes are swiftly derailed when his friend Sayed is found dead and Shehta is wrongfully accused of the murder — a charge he is wholly unprepared to fight. With the help of Meshmesh, his loyal army companion, Shehta embarks on an increasingly desperate and comical struggle to prove his innocence and clear his name before it is too late. The film wraps its protagonist's nightmarish predicament in the warm comedic tradition of Egyptian popular cinema, using Shehta's hapless battle against injustice to reflect on the absurdities of a legal system that fails the innocent.
