The Quail and Autumn is an Egyptian drama film adapted from a novel by Naguib Mahfouz, set in the aftermath of the 1952 July Revolution. Eissa Al-Dabagh, a former political operative whose party was swept from power, finds himself adrift and stripped of the influence he once wielded. Seeking to recapture the illusion of power, he turns to Riri, a young woman of the night, hoping to project dominance he no longer possesses. She develops genuine feelings for him, but his hollow character is exposed when he casts her aside upon learning she is pregnant. The film is a penetrating character study of political obsolescence and moral bankruptcy in mid-twentieth-century Egypt.
