Axe in the Head is an Egyptian romantic drama set in the rural villages of Upper Egypt. Najawi is a humble ferryman who operates a communal boat, shuttling villagers across the river for a modest symbolic fee. Despite having little in the way of material wealth, he has earned the genuine love and respect of his community through his honesty and generosity of spirit. He falls deeply in love with Saadia, a beautiful young woman from the village, and she returns his feelings. But her family refuses to sanction the marriage, objecting on the grounds of his poverty. The film is a heartfelt and atmospheric portrayal of love thwarted by social convention, set against the distinctive landscape and traditions of Egypt's Upper South.
