
He was born in Qalyoub to a father who worked as a mayor. He began his life as an employee in the Ministry of Haqqaniya, and worked with the Abdul Rahman Rushdi troupe in 1923. He joined the Ramses troupe and left it in 1930 to join the Fatima Rushdie troupe. Then he returned to forming the Actors’ Union, which lasted more than 6 months. Then he joined the National Troupe when it was formed, and remained there until it became the National Theater Troupe after his death. His eyes suffered from retinal detachment, which prevented him from standing on stage, and he traveled to Germany for treatment. At the beginning of his life, he worked as a director for high school theater groups, and among his students was Fakher Fakher. In 1927, he published an art magazine, but he did not continue publishing it for long. Among his most famous roles on stage: (Majnun Laila, Mark Antonio, Shajarat al-Durr, Antara bin Shaddad, Shahryar). His last play was (Tears of the Devil) in 1959. Movies always placed him in the role of a rich, hard-hearted aristocratic man, as in the films: (Ana Bent Min), (Return My Heart), and (The Hearts of Virgins). He married the dancer Kitty when he was a star in Youssef Bey Wehbe's band. He worked as an acting coach at Cairo and Alexandria University, then an acting consultant at the Free Culture University. He was awarded the First Class Medal of Sciences and Arts in 1960 on the Second Flag Day. He was the one who established the Actors' Guild. He lost his sight in his last days
