Al-Muzayfoun is an Egyptian comedy film that draws on the classic mistaken-identity premise of the inspector incognito. The residents of a village suffer under a corrupt mayor whose abuses have finally prompted the capital to dispatch an undercover inspector. When the mayor learns of the plan, he is on high alert — so when a mysterious young stranger arrives in town, the mayor assumes he must be the feared inspector and treats him with exaggerated deference. The young man, quick to read the situation, uses the misunderstanding to champion the villagers' grievances against the mayor. Adding another layer of comic complication, he falls in love with the mayor's own daughter. The film is a nimble social comedy that skewers corruption through the device of a well-timed identity mix-up.
