The Joy Thief is an Egyptian popular comedy film set in the Mokattam neighborhood of Cairo. Awad is deeply in love with Ahlam, a dancer who finds herself married to Shata — but whose heart remains with Awad. Desperate to change their fate, Awad launches a frantic race against time to scrape together the money for a marriage proposal, resorting to increasingly comic measures including stealing his own brother's clothes to sell them. Meanwhile, Ahlam does what she can to help from her end. A warm and funny slice of working-class Egyptian life, The Joy Thief balances romantic longing with the kind of scrappy street humor that has made Egyptian popular comedy so enduringly beloved.
