The Desert Ark, is a 1998 Algerian movie, directed by Mohamed Chouikh, and starring Myriam Aouffen, Abdelkader Belmokadem, Hacen Abdou. with a runtime of 87 minutes.
The Desert Ark (L'Arche du Désert) is a 1997 Algerian drama that reimagines the Romeo and Juliet story against the stark beauty of the Sahara Desert. When Miriam and Amin, two young people from rival ethnic communities sharing an oasis, begin a secret romance, their innocent affection ignites long-suppressed tensions rooted in unspoken racial boundaries. The film uses the couple's love as a lens to expose the invisible lines of racism that divide communities — boundaries no one questions because no one remembers their origin. Only water, the one resource that demands equality, stands indifferent to human division. Nominated for the Golden Leopard at the 1997 Locarno Film Festival.
