Overview

Four on an Official Mission is an Egyptian comedy film that puts the hapless civil servant Anwar Abdel Mawla at the center of an absurdist bureaucratic adventure. Anwar once dreamed of escaping the routine to work in tourism in Greece, but fate anchors him to a dull government desk job. His chance at something different arrives in the form of an unusual official errand: delivering an inheritance to the Treasury in Cairo. The catch — the inheritance consists of a monkey, a donkey, and a goat. What follows is a relentless cascade of comic misadventures that Anwar cannot escape no matter how hard he tries, as the three animals wreak havoc on his journey. The film is a sharp and affectionate satire of Egyptian bureaucracy and the absurdities of working-class life.
