Abbasiya 1 is an Egyptian comedy film that wrings sharp satirical comedy from a case of mistaken identity gone spectacularly wrong. When three prisoners escape during their transfer from Tanta to the Abbasiya psychiatric hospital, the driver and a hospital aide panic and check three perfectly sane strangers into the ward in their place. The film splits its story between two chaotic worlds: the sane men trapped inside the asylum trying to convince doctors of their sanity, and the escaped prisoners roaming freely among ordinary Egyptians outside. A classic Egyptian farce that plays with the blurry line between madness and reason.
