Dreams of the City is a Syrian drama film following young Dib, who relocates with his mother and younger brother from Quneitra to Damascus after their father's death. They are reluctantly taken in by the children's tyrannical grandfather, who schemes to force his daughter into remarriage while Dib becomes mesmerized by Damascus's secrets and allure. Behind Dib's growing-up story looms the turbulent politics of 1950s Syria — the fall of the military dictatorship, the nationalization of the Suez Canal, Nasser's rise to power in Cairo, and the Egyptian-Syrian union of 1958. As grand ideals collapse around him, Dib's innocent childhood dreams shatter against a world of cruelty and violence, turning the city's promise into a haunting nightmare.
