Best Times is the debut feature film from Egyptian writer-director Hala Khalil, presented at the San Francisco Arab Film Festival in 2005. The film follows Salma, played by Hanan Turk, a professionally accomplished middle-aged woman who finds herself adrift emotionally after the sudden death of her mother. Her fragile equilibrium is further unsettled by a series of anonymous gifts and mysterious letters from an unknown admirer, prompting her to sift through the men in her life for answers. Along the way, she reconnects with two close childhood friends — Yousriyya, played by Hind Sabri, and Duha, played by Menna Shalabi — whose own stories weave into hers in this intimate and quietly powerful independent drama.
