Bas Ya Bahar (The Cruel Sea) is a landmark Kuwaiti historical drama and the first feature film produced by Kuwait. Set in the era before the discovery of oil, when pearl diving was the lifeblood of the Gulf, the film tells the story of a disabled pearl diver who forbids his son Mussaid from following him into the sea. A poignant portrait of tradition, sacrifice, and the bond between father and son, the film earned recognition at Arab and international festivals and became the first Kuwaiti entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 45th Oscars.
