Overview
Al-Mahzala is an Arabic stage comedy built on the timeless architecture of social satire, centering on three brothers who all share the name Abbas. Abbas the First hatches a scheme to have Abbas the Third declared insane, clearing the way for him to seize the land the third brother stands to inherit. His plan seems foolproof — until the unexpected arrival of Abbas the Second throws everything into disarray and unravels the conspirator's calculations. Sharp and farcical, the play uses the absurdity of mistaken identities and family greed to expose the lengths people will go to for money, delivering its critique of inheritance disputes with comic precision.
