Saify is an Egyptian drama film set in the year 2000, following 40-year-old Mohamed Saify, a washed-up con man deep in debt to everyone around him, including his ex-wife. Running a dilapidated cassette shop that sells recordings of banned Islamic sermons, Saify believes he has found his next illicit scheme. His sermon supplier is Al-Mahdi, the shady religious advisor to influential local philanthropist Sheikh Asaad Aman. When Saify stumbles upon a cassette containing a scandalous recording of the powerful Sheikh, he becomes convinced his fortunes are about to change — setting off a darkly comic thriller of blackmail, greed, and miscalculation in turn-of-the-millennium Cairo.
