Overview

Les Misérables is a bold Sudanese adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel, brought to screen for an African Arabic-speaking audience by one of Sudan's most celebrated filmmakers. The esteemed actor Gamal Hassan takes on the role of Jean Valjean — a man whose poverty and misfortune drive him into crime, before a gradual and hard-won transformation takes hold with the support of those around him. The director saw in Hugo's timeless story a vital parable for Sudan itself: a narrative about the will to change, the possibility of redemption, and the social conditions that either crush or uplift the human spirit. A culturally significant film that localises a universal tale for a new audience.
