El Manara is an Algerian drama film that traces the intertwined lives of three lifelong friends — Asma, Fawzi, and Ramdane — whose carefree bond is shattered by the upheaval of Algeria's October 1988 riots. As political repression gives way to democratic upheaval and an Islamist wave, each friend is pulled in a different direction. Fawzi becomes immersed in the independent press movement, while Ramdane, a compassionate doctor, remains tied to the struggles of ordinary citizens. Asma fights to hold the trio together, but history proves too powerful. El Manara is a compelling portrait of a generation caught between loyalty and ideology, friendship and political identity, set against the dramatic backdrop of modern Algerian history.
