Backbreaking is an Egyptian dramatic film based on a harrowing true story. Rouh, a young Egyptian woman, is deceived by her husband and manipulated into leaving Egypt — only to find herself trapped inside an ISIS stronghold in Syria. Managing to escape, she reaches a camp sheltering other women who fled the militant group, but the journey home to Egypt feels impossibly far away. The film does not flinch from depicting the physical and psychological ordeal Rouh endures, nor from confronting the vulnerability that made her a target. A sobering, courageous portrait of survival, displacement, and the devastating consequences of misplaced trust.
