Overview

Ave Maria is a Palestinian short drama film — and Academy Award nominee — that disrupts the cloistered silence of five nuns living in the West Bank wilderness with the arrival of an unexpected crisis. When an Israeli settler family's car breaks down directly outside the convent gates at the precise moment the Jewish Sabbath begins, both parties find themselves trapped in a predicament that neither their faith nor their politics has prepared them for. Unable to use the phone themselves on the Sabbath, the settlers must rely on the nuns — who have taken a vow of silence. The result is a gently absurdist, quietly profound meditation on coexistence, the rigidity of religious law, and the small, surprising acts of grace that can occur when people with everything dividing them have no choice but to cooperate.
