He is met with resentment from relatives who question his presence, forcing him to confront grief, unspoken love, and his own identity in relation to the child. The film meditates on widowhood — both that of others and one's own — on the unexpected depth of love for children who are not one's own, and on the kind of devotion that outlasts its object.
