Destiny is a 1997 Egyptian historical epic directed by the legendary Youssef Chahine and starring Nour El-Sherif as the twelfth-century Andalusian philosopher Averroes (Ibn Rushd). Set in Moorish Spain under Arab rule, the film follows Averroes as his enlightened teachings begin to threaten the political establishment. When fundamentalist rivals conspire to undermine the caliph who has long championed rational thought, the stage is set for a dramatic collision between open inquiry and ideological extremism. A sweeping meditation on the enduring struggle between knowledge and fanaticism, Destiny remains one of the most celebrated works in Arabic cinema.
Destiny is a 1997 Egyptian-French historical drama film directed and co-written by Youssef Chahine. It was screened out of competition at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 70th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
