Sandstorm, is a 1982 Algerian movie, directed by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina, and starring Nadir Benguedih, Leila Shenna, Nadia Talbi. with a runtime of 103 minutes.
Sandstorm, or Vent de Sable, is an Algerian drama set in a desert oasis community perpetually lashed by desert winds. When Amara's wife Halima gives birth to their eighth daughter with no male heir, shame and anger overwhelm him and he casts her out in an act of bitter injustice. The film is a powerful indictment of the patriarchal treatment of women in tribal desert society, where tradition and pride override basic human compassion. Algeria's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 55th Oscars, the film was also selected for the official competition at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.
