The Journey is a six-part episodic documentary produced by Field of Vision and The New Yorker, filmed in 2015, that immerses viewers in the Syrian refugee crisis through a single harrowing story. Filmmaker Matthew Cassel, based in Istanbul, follows Aboud Shalhoub, a Syrian refugee fleeing war-ravaged Damascus on a 1,700-mile, seven-month journey filled with obstacles in pursuit of a new life in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Cassel's colleague Simon Safieh remains in Damascus documenting Aboud's wife and children as they await their chance to reunite with him in Europe, offering an intimate human account of displacement and resilience.
