Black Sweat (Sueur Noire) is an Algerian historical drama set during the era of French colonization. A young Algerian boy, able to attend a French lycée thanks to his father's standing in their village, is suddenly expelled — shattering his father's dream of seeing his son rise through the social ranks. With few options, the young man takes work in the mines, where harsh conditions and the brutal suppression of a workers' general strike awaken him to the realities of class struggle and colonial oppression. Radicalized by what he witnesses, he joins the resistance movement fighting against discrimination and the violence of colonial rule. The film traces a young man's journey from personal ambition to collective consciousness, offering a powerful portrait of Algerian society on the eve of the independence movement.
