Overview

East of Noon (Sharq 12) is a striking Egyptian drama film directed by Hind Shouma, set in a timeless confined world that operates like an allegorical stage. At the center is Abdo, a 19-year-old musical prodigy who uses his art as an act of quiet rebellion against the authority of Shawky — an eccentric 70-year-old showman who governs with a calculated blend of spectacle and fear. Rounding out the trio is Jalala, a 75-year-old storyteller who soothes those around him with tales of a sea no one else has ever seen. East of Noon is a sharp political satire, using the framework of fable to expose the internal weaknesses of authoritarian systems and their fundamental vulnerability to the unshackled vision of youth. A bold, visually distinctive piece of Arabic cinema.
