Overview

We Are From There — نحن من هناك — is a deeply moving Syrian documentary that follows two brothers of starkly different temperaments as their homeland sinks into war. Jamil, a hardworking carpenter following in his father's trade, emigrates first to Beirut and then makes a clandestine journey to Sweden. Milad, a sensitive and dreamy trumpeter, stays behind in Damascus as long as he can before eventually making his way to Berlin. Their cousin Wissam films their parallel journeys over more than five years, weaving in childhood memories while probing what home truly means when it is lost. Less a film about the horrors of war than about the psychological weight of displacement, the documentary traces with humility and admiration how two very different men each find their own way to rebuild a life in exile.
