Overview

Banana is an Egyptian social drama that places a struggling marriage at the center of its story. Engineer Ahmed feels emotionally stranded in a relationship that has grown cold and lifeless — a dead marriage that offers him neither warmth nor connection. In search of an emotional escape, he turns to mut'ah marriage, a form of temporary marriage, as a way to fill the void his primary relationship cannot. The film takes a candid and provocative look at desire, fidelity, and the fault lines that emerge when a marriage loses its humanity, raising uncomfortable questions about what men and women seek from one another and the social and religious frameworks that govern their choices.
