Overview

The Sea Between Us (La mer entre nous) is a Lebanese documentary directed by Marlene Edoyan that follows two women of the same generation — Hayat, a Muslim, and Wafaa, a Christian — living in a Beirut still scarred by fifteen years of civil war. More than two decades after the war's end, the city remains deeply fractured, where Hezbollah and the Phalange coexist as established political parties and nearby conflicts continually reopen old wounds. Edoyan uses a masterful direct cinema approach to explore whether genuine reconciliation is possible in a city divided by invisible borders — doing so through the often-overlooked lens of women's perspectives. The result is a nuanced, intimate portrait of coexistence, memory, and the limits of forgiveness in contemporary Beirut.
