Encounters on the Tigris, Part 1, is a 2022 Iraqi movie, directed by Sherko Abbas. with a runtime of 12 minutes.
Encounters on the Tigris, Part 1 is a documentary film that follows artist and filmmaker Sherko Abbas on a 2022 journey along the ancient Tigris River, searching for undocumented oral traditions and the ecological wisdom embedded within them. Beginning at an ancient Christian church in Faysh Khabur near Iraq's volatile border, Abbas learns how the river has historically served as a protective boundary for vulnerable communities. Traveling onward to a neighborhood in Mosul devastated by ISIS, he records the folk tales locals share with their children about the river and the historic buildings that once lined its banks. The journey concludes in Samarra, where fishermen mourn the Tigris's dramatic depletion due to drought. A visually rich and deeply humanistic piece of Iraqi documentary filmmaking.
