Damascus Dreams is a Canadian-Syrian documentary directed by Émilie Serri, who was born in Canada and had only briefly visited her father's homeland before the civil war erupted. Following her grandmother's death, Serri revisited old family photographs and films and conducted interviews with relatives and Syrians forced into exile, weaving their testimonies with her own fragmented memories. For some, Syria persists with the vividness of jasmine; for others, recollections have already faded. The film is a deeply personal meditation on displacement, inherited memory, and the stories that families keep — and deliberately leave untold — to protect the next generation.
