The Upper Gate is a documentary by Lebanese filmmaker Arab Loutfi, who returns to her hometown of Sidon — the historic capital of southern Lebanon — to piece together her personal memories of the city in the wake of the devastating 1982 Israeli invasion. Weaving together recollections from herself, her sister Maha, her uncle, and childhood friends, Loutfi intersperses personal photographs and newspaper clippings to reconstruct a portrait of a city and a life forever altered by war. An intimate meditation on memory, loss, and the places that shape who we are.
