The River, is a 1978 Iraqi movie, directed by Faisal Al-Yasiri, and starring Sami Kaftan, Haqqi Al Chibli, Hatem Salman. with a runtime of 110 minutes.
The River is an Arabic drama film set in the world of fishermen who live under the shadow of systematic exploitation by a powerful local figure known as Sabti, who extracts the fruits of their labor while they are left with nothing. When Mahmoud, the proud leader of the Nu'mani tribe, stands up against this arrangement and refuses to be exploited any longer, he becomes a symbol of resistance for the downtrodden fishing community. But his defiance is short-lived: Mahmoud vanishes under mysterious circumstances, and with him disappears the momentum of the struggle. A sobering and atmospheric film about class injustice, the silencing of dissent, and the difficult question of what happens to a community when its strongest voice is extinguished.
