Overview

Smartcity is a Moroccan documentary that follows Houcine, a 64-year-old rag-and-bone man working the streets of Casablanca alongside hundreds of others whose essential labor remains largely invisible to the city around them. When local authorities announce a decision to ban animal-drawn carts as part of an ambitious plan to rebrand Casablanca as a "Smart City," Houcine and his fellow workers face the erasure of their livelihoods in the name of modernization. Director tracks Houcine's daily routine with patient intimacy — a man navigating mounting health problems while confronting a system that sees his work as an obstacle to progress rather than a pillar of the city's informal economy.
