Overview

Alam is a Palestinian drama film that portrays teenage life inside the Green Line with unflinching honesty. Seventeen-year-old Tamer and his friends live like any adolescents — playing video games, chasing girls, and avoiding their schoolwork. But the arrival of Maysaa, a sharp-witted and politically aware new classmate, pulls Tamer out of his comfortable drift and into something far more consequential. Together with their friend Safwat, the three devise a quiet act of defiance: secretly raising the Palestinian flag during the local celebrations of Israeli Independence Day, a date that Palestinian communities observe as a day of mourning for the Nakba of 70 years prior. Tamer, uncertain of his own convictions until now, must decide what he believes and how much he is willing to risk for it. A moving, precisely observed coming-of-age film about identity, collective memory, and the weight of history on young shoulders.
